Digimon 30 days meme

Day 14: Least favourite season.

Savers. I haven't even watched it properly all the way through ._.a; (/missing a couple of eps by the end) I ADORE some things about it - the digivices, Masaru's character and how he's not some perfect super nice kid, Ikuto's everything ever, the involvement with the real world, etc... But the art style looks /terrible/ a lot of the time, the DATS uniforms are hideous, Tohma's a boring-ass gary stu, and Yoshino's easily THE most boring female character ever. I can't even hate her, I just don't care for her either way. She's blaaaand as fuck.

Second one, and I want to mention it because ugh, fandom fucking worships this, would be Tamers, with its awful awful AWFUL pacing and some of the worst "bad animation studio" episodes in the franchise. Omfg look at the ep where Terriermon evolves to Ultimate, for example, it's the fugliest shit ever. This probably happens 'cause that style's all pointy and gross, and Tamers's art style is the roundest and softest of them all :/ But it still makes for some really, really hideous episodes.

Also, what they do with Ruki really pisses me off. Yay, let's have a girl who isn't color-coded pink and sweet and demure and shy and screaming STEREOTYPICAL GIIIIRL all around-- oh wait, no, it's just her issues~*~, by the end of the series she'll have "developed" into a proper female character, squeeing about Culumon and dressing up in frilly dresses!!11 Wtf fuck that shit e_e; God forbid she learns to open up and trust others but doesn't suddenly change from a tomboy to a pretty princess.

I also really dislike how it treats the "secondary" kids. Why make it all about Takato/Ruki/Jianliang, if you're later gonna involve all these kids who're just as awesome and have varied personalities and such, but not let them shine at all? Outside of Juri, and then she shines because of some uber angsty plot (and she's amazing and so strong and ajjkdskjf her backstory and her family), not because of her ability as a Tamer or the powers she gets or anything like that. GIVE THE OTHER KIDS COOL EVOLUTION/SLASH CARD/OP&ED SCENES, DAMN IT.

I've tried at least twice to watch Tamers but I can never get through it. Apparently it's amazing but it just gets really dark and lingers there for way too long. That and I couldn't get interested in the characters. They might get better later on, but they're not terribly compelling early in the series. (Juri looked promising but I just couldn't watch any more.)

"by the end of the series she'll have "developed" into a proper female character, squeeing about Culumon and dressing up in frilly dresses!!1"

What. That's some crappy characterization, I'm sorry.

I loved Takato right away, and Impmon's arc is awesome, but yeah, I get what you mean. Besides, like I said, Tamers' pacing is just so awful omfg. It takes FOREVER for things to happen. They waste all this time in random "monster-of-the-week" battles in the real world - and they're still SLOW. It takes AGES for the digimon to evolve to adult level, wtf -, then they do the freaking same in the digital world.

There're tons of awesome things about it, though, don't get me wrong. But I always see it mentioned as it being THE BESTEST EVER!11 and Ruki being THE BEST GIRL!1! when... she's pretty much the same as all the others. Even worse, possibly, because I'd rather have a girl who's "cute" and likes pink from the start, where that just blends in with her character, than one whose DEVELOPMENT fucking involves growing to admit she loves her frills and pink and crap. You're not more adult because you put on a fucking dress, Digimon. /punts/

For some reason, it seems like the "best girl" is always the least "feminine" character. Or maybe that's just what it seems like to me. :/

That too. Although with Digimon I understand how people'd like one who stands out from the norm of PIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINK and stuff? The problem is that she... doesn't, really, save for being color-coded in blue for once. She ends up just as girly and femenine, AND revealing this was the "true" and "good" version of herself all along.

But yeah, this is a big problem with fandom in general. It's hard to have a balance between "I love this girl for not following gender roles / stereotypes" and "I love this girl because she acts like a stereotypical man".

It's why people who love Toph and think every single other female character in ATLA suck rub me the wrong way.

I understand that fandom wants to praise "strong women" but I feel like the general idea of a strong woman is still dictated by the way society views gender. Being sensitive or having stereotypical feminine hobbies makes them less of a character because they're, as you say, not masculine enough and therefore not strong. Sigh.

It'd be cool if people could just love characters because they love them. But maybe I'm just sad that the sensitive ladies get pushed aside, since I see myself in them most.

Also Toph is awesome but most of the main cast is awesome! Fandom really bothered me in that way too, that is, praising Toph at the expense of the other female characters.
